Linking natural gas, agricultural sectors key to economic growth

Eng. Charles Sangweni, Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), stated that linking the natural gas sector with the agricultural sector will have a profound impact on the economy, as the two sectors are closely interdependent.

Sangweni made these remarks on August 7, 2025, during his visit to the Nanenane International Agricultural Exhibition 2025, held in Dodoma.

He elaborated that the natural gas produced in the country can serve as a feedstock for urea production, which is a key ingredient in the manufacture of various types of fertilizers, including urea.

Sangweni added that the use of natural gas in vehicles has significantly reduced fuel costs; therefore, utilizing natural gas-powered vehicles to transport agricultural produce will lower transportation expenses and consequently increase profit margins.

He also noted that the agricultural sector has been a vital pillar in supporting oil and gas projects by providing food to the individuals working on such projects.

Despite the crucial role played by the agricultural sector, Sangweni revealed that, at times, agricultural produce does not meet the quality and standards required by international energy companies operating in the country, which poses a significant challenge.

To address this challenge, Sangweni stated that PURA, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, is working to ensure that the agricultural produce meets the required quality and standards for the greater economic benefit.
