Biteko launches national clean cooking communication strategy

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, has launched the National Clean Cooking Communication Strategy, alongside a nationwide campaign aimed at advancing the clean cooking agenda and enhancing public awareness.

The strategy and campaign are intended to raise public awareness about clean cooking, contributing to the national goal of ensuring that 80% of Tanzanians adopt clean energy for cooking by 2034.

While launching the strategy on June 2, 2025, in Dodoma, Dr. Biteko directed stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to begin immediate implementation in order to achieve the intended objectives.

He also commended H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the clean cooking champion within Tanzania and beyond, for carrying the clean cooking agenda with sheer passion and for launching the clean cooking strategy in 2024.

“To demonstrate her commitment to the clean cooking agenda, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has established a dedicated clean cooking unit within the Ministry of Energy, tasked with overseeing the implementation of the clean cooking strategy,” added Dr. Biteko.

Statistically, Dr. Biteko emphasized that the use of unclean energy sources for cooking continues to adversely affect the lives of many, especially mothers and children under the age of five. He pointed out that over 2.1 billion people worldwide lack access to clean cooking, with approximately 990 million of them living in Africa.

To achieve the aspirations of the clean cooking strategy, Dr. Biteko added that the Government, through the Ministry of Energy and in collaboration with all key stakeholders, must ensure timely delivery of all milestones outlined in the strategy.

“He also tasked the Ministry of Energy to prepare and implement inclusive clean cooking campaigns to raise public awareness through various channels. He emphasized that the campaign should feature clear messages, making it easy for stakeholders to understand and engage with.

Additionally, he tasked the Ministry to conduct quarterly monitoring and evaluation to gauge the performance of the implementation of the clean cooking strategy.
