PURA to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders from South Africa

The Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) met with the Tanzania Ambassador to South Africa, Hon. James Bwana to discuss strategies for strengthening collaboration between the Authority and stakeholders involved in upstream petroleum activities in South Africa.

The meeting, held on April 9, 2026, at the Tanzanian Embassy in South Africa, was attended by several PURA management members, including the Director General, Engineer Charles Sangweni.

During the meeting, Sangweni explained that PURA has continued to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, including regulatory institutions involved in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas in various countries, with the aim of exchanging experiences and building institutional capacity.

“Through partnerships between PURA and regional institutions that operate similarly, such as EPRA in Kenya and PAU in Uganda, PURA has continued to exchange experiences and expertise, which has been of great benefit to all parties,” added Sangweni.

Sangweni also explained that PURA intends to strengthen partnerships with upstream petroleum stakeholders in Southern Africa and therefore requested His Excellency the Ambassador’s support in achieving this objective.

For his part, Ambassador Bwana said he had received the request and commended PURA for its decision to strengthen collaboration with regulatory institutions and stakeholders involved in upstream petroleum activities in South Africa.

“The Embassy of Tanzania in South Africa is ready to bring together PURA and institutions and stakeholders such as regulatory authorities, educational institutions, oil and natural gas exploration companies, and research and development institutions that can establish productive partnerships for the benefit of PURA and the oil and natural gas sector in the country,” added Ambassador Bwana.
